From a Rural Cambodian Dream to a Tourism Business

At the heart of Angkor Insider Travel & Tours is the story of its founder, Lim Channy—a story of courage, perseverance, hope, and a dream that began in rural Cambodia.

A Childhood Shaped by Hardship, but Driven by Hope

Channy is the seventh child in her family. She grew up in a rural area of Siem Reap in a family with very limited resources. Her childhood was marked by poverty, family hardship, and a difficult relationship between her parents, where violence was often part of the home environment.

She lived with fear every day, but she never lost hope.

Even as a young girl, Channy held tightly to one dream: to continue her education and create a better future for herself and her family.

Her journey was not easy.

From around the age of five, while other children in her village were enjoying their childhood, Channy was already taking on responsibilities far beyond her age. She learned to cook, do household chores, feed the animals, grow vegetables, collect water, and help take care of her family.

Her childhood was very different from that of other children.

Throughout the years, Channy woke up at around 4:00 a.m. every morning to complete her responsibilities before going to school. After returning home from school, she continued working. Around 5:00–6:30 p.m., she had to refill the large water jars used by the whole family for washing clothes, bathing, and other daily needs. She also had to make sure that food was prepared and ready to serve for the entire family.

Despite these responsibilities, she refused to give up on her education.

She made a strong commitment to her mother and asked for the opportunity to continue studying. She promised that she would complete all of her responsibilities at home while continuing her education.

At that time, many of her seven siblings had already left school and started working to help support the family.

But Channy chose a different path.

She believed that education could change her life.

With determination, she continued studying despite the many obstacles she faced. She eventually completed Grade 12, traveling approximately 40 kilometers by bicycle every day to attend school.

It was a difficult journey, but every kilometer brought her one step closer to her dream.

Education Became the Door That Changed Her Life

For Channy, education was more than attending school. It was a way to open a door to a different future.

Her determination eventually led her to receive educational opportunities and scholarships through an NGO-supported hospitality school. These opportunities allowed her to continue developing her knowledge and skills and later provided her with the opportunity to study in France.

She studied hospitality and tourism and gained valuable professional experience in hotels, restaurants, private companies, sales, marketing, and customer service.

These experiences helped her understand not only the tourism industry, but also the importance of professional service, responsibility, communication, and creating meaningful experiences for customers.

Step by step, she built her career in Cambodia’s tourism industry.

Her professional journey eventually led her to become an entrepreneur.

Turning a Dream into a Business

Becoming an entrepreneur was never only about building a company for Channy.

Her personal experiences shaped the way she viewed business.

She knew what it felt like to grow up without many opportunities. She understood how education could change a person’s life. She experienced firsthand how difficult it could be for women and people from rural communities to access opportunities.

This became the foundation of her entrepreneurial vision.

She wanted to build a tourism business that could create opportunities for others while introducing international travelers to the Cambodia she knows and loves.

That dream became Angkor Insider Travel & Tours.

The company was established to connect international travelers with the real Cambodia behind the famous temples—its people, culture, countryside, food, traditions, crafts, communities, and everyday way of life.

For Channy, tourism is not simply about visiting famous destinations.

It is about meeting people, understanding cultures, sharing experiences, and creating opportunities.

Today, Angkor Insider Travel & Tours continues to develop with a clear purpose: to support local communities, empower women, create opportunities for children and young people, and help preserve Cambodia’s authentic culture and heritage.
